Condition

The artist's sheet has been hinged to the mount along its upper edge, on the reverse. There is one small loss in the upper left corner and some small tears are visible along the extreme edges, including two small tears in the upper edge and a circa 2cm tear in the right edge closer to the upper right corner. The paper appears to be sunned and there are some small, scattered spots of surface dirt throughout, notably in the sky. This work could possibly benefit from some light surface cleaning. Overall, this work is in fairly good condition. Presented glazed, in a simple frame.

Catalogue Note

Dated circa 1904-05, this work was most probably painted in Lovran, a tourist destination in modern day Croatia. Widely recognized as one of the greatest modern Hungarian painters, in his work József Rippl-Rónai combined hints of Fauvism, Art Nouveau and Expressionism. Soon exhibiting with the Nabis at the Galerie Durand Ruel in 1899, the artist left Paris and returned to Hungary.
