Description

  • Mary Magdalene
  • signed, inscribed and dated Aleksander Rycerski / Paris 1865 lower left
  • oil on canvas
  • 180 by 180cm., 71 by 71in.

Provenance

Private collection, Germany (until 2007); thence by descent to the present owner

Condition

The canvas has been lined. Some frame rubbing is visible along the lower framing edge and there is some minor undulation in the canvas in the left framing edge. Inspection under ultra-violet light reveals an un-even layer of residual varnish which prevents the UV light from fully penetrating. However, some scattered retouching is visible, including: - two circa 10cm horizontal strokes closer to the right framing edge, and one circa 20cm horizontal stroke in the right hand side of the lower framing edge, all possibly addressing old tears; - extensive strokes of retouching along the extreme right framing edge; - clusters of small spots in the background in the upper and lower halves of the composition; and - a few isolated spots in the figure's cheek, hair, and left hand. This work could benefit from some surface cleaning. Presented in a decorative gilt frame.
