Condition

The canvas has not been lined and is securely attached to what appears to be its original stretcher. A pattern of hairline craquelure is visible throughout. Inspection under ultra-violet light reveals a thick layer of residual varnish and a circa 7cm stroke of retouching (also patched on the reverse and possibly addressing an old tear) in the background to the right of the figure's face. Other minor spots of cosmetic retouching are also visible in the lower half of the composition. Overall, this work is in good condition and ready to hang. Presented in a decorative gilt frame with a nameplate. Colours are somewhat less red than in the catalogue illustration.
