Condition

The canvas has not been lined and has been securely attached to what appears to be its original keyed wooden stretcher. There is a pattern of craquelure in the sky, as visible in the catalogue illustration, and a fine stretcher bar mark corresponding to the central stretcher member is visible. Inspection under ultra-violet light reveals some areas of fluorescence due to uneven residual varnish, and some scattered spots of cosmetic retouching, including: - some finely applied strokes in the figure's cheek; - some isolated spots in the rocks in the lower half of the composition; - one small spot in the sky in the upper left corner; and - some strokes along the centre of the left framing edge. Some of the above retouchings have somewhat discoloured in time and are also visible to the naked eye upon close inspection. Otherwise, this work presents well, is in overall good condition and is ready to hang. Presented in a decorative gilt frame.
