Condition
The canvas has been lined and is securely attached to a keyed wooden stretcher. There are some scattered spots of old paint flaking, some of which are visible in the catalogue illustration, along the upper, right and lower framing edges. However, these appear to be stable.
Inspection under ultra-violet light reveals a layer of old residual varnish which makes the surface quite difficult to read. However, some small, isolated spots of cosmetic retouching are visible, including:
- some pin-head sized spots in the background in the upper centre of the composition;
- some fine strokes in the leg of the stool closer to the boy's hand, and
- one small spot below the boy's chin.
Overall, this work presents very well and is in good condition. This work is ready to hang.
Presented in a decorative gilt frame.
Colours are somewhat less yellow than in the catalogue illustration.
