Provenance

Haynes Fine Art, London (purchased at the above sale)
Purchased from the above by the aunt of the present owner in 1996; thence by descent

Condition

The canvas has an old lining. Ultra-violet light reveals an even layer of residual varnish. Scattered spots of retouching are visible, including: - clusters of retouching in the sky in the upper left quadrant; - small spots of cosmetic retouching in the right cheek and arm of the woman playing with the child and in the child's left arm and leg; and - minor spots in the faces and in the clothing of the three figures in the centre; However, these retouchings are not visible to the naked eye and do not affect the appearance of the work, which is very good. Overall, this work is in good condition and is ready to hang. Presented in a decorative gilt frame.
