Condition

The panel is flat, even, and ensuring a stable support. Inspection under ultra-violet light reveals minor spots of retouching, including: - a circa 7cm diagonal line of retouching in the mirror's frame in the centre of the composition, possibly addressing a superficial scratch; - one spot of cosmetic retouching in the upper left corner; - some intermittent strokes along the right framing edge addressing frame rubbing; and - minor spots in the far lower right corner. The main composition appears to be untouched. This work is otherwise in overall good condition, presents very well and is ready to hang. Presented in a decorative gilt frame.

Catalogue Note

Settling in Paris 1862, Madrazo specialised in female portraiture, with the sitter often painted against a refined and exquisite setting. Here, Aline Mason, his favourite model and daughter of the Marquis de Casa Riera's concierge in Paris, is depicted as a young artist engaging in her craft.

Madrazo began his training under his father Federico, followed by studies at the School of Fine Arts, Madrid and then under Léon Cogniet in Paris. His work won many prizes and attracted patrons outside of France, notably in New York and London.
