Condition

The canvas has been lined and is securely attached to a keyed wooden stretcher. Inspection under ultra-violet light reveals some areas of uneven varnish which make the surface quite difficult to read. However, a small area of retouching is visible in the stone wall in the centre of the right framing edge, and very small spots are visible in the upper right corner. Vestiges of old residual varnish are visible within and around the signature, which also appears to have been partially strengthened. Overall, this work is in good condition and is ready to hang. Presented in a decorative gilt frame with a beige inner slip.

Catalogue Note

Painted in 1882 during the artist's trip around Spain with Belgian painters Théo Van Rysselberghe, Frantz Chartet and Constantin Meunier, the present canvas was formally laid down on a panel onto which Regoyos had painted a Dutch landscape. In 2010 the panel and the canvas were separated, thus resulting in two separate works (the panel now no. 17 in the 2014 catalogue raisonné).

We are grateful to Juan San Nicolás for his help in cataloguing this work.
