Overall the condition of the bronze is very good, with minor dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. There are a few minor nicks and scratches, including to the tip of the nose. There is some minor residue to the proper left cheek. There is some light surface staining from moisture, including to the proper right cheek down to the upper lip, and at the back on the proper left side. One of the separately cast vessels inserted behind the 'wings' is detachable. The vessel to the interior also detaches. There is particular wear to the interior of these vessels, consistent with use.

Berthoud produced a series of busts of the actress Sarah Bernhardt, the formidable actress and darling of the European Art Nouveau movement, in several guises. The present jardinière with Bernhardt's features is a particularly original composition.
