Denney writes, 'The expanse of pale lime-green close-fitted carpet is relieved by a beautiful Aubusson in rose pink and coral.' (Denney, op. cit., p. 65)

Condition

Overall measurements; 230cm across the top, 229cm across the bottom, 171cm across the left hand side, 169cm across the right hand side Flat woven. There are areas of cobbled repair throughout, for example see central bouquet of flowers. Another noticeable area of repair in the lower right corner adjoining the ivory with the orange acanthus scroll. Some losses, including a small 'bite' to the central right hand edge, also an area of repair in the same section. The top left corner slightly discoloured. Another area of discolouration can be found in the lower central panel. Rug is professionally, later, lined to the underside. Rug would benefit from a professional clean. First hand inspection advised, a charming example of its type.

Catalogue Note

Aubusson carpets were favoured by Vivien and Larry in their London and country homes and there are examples photographed in both and recorded in the 1948 Notley Inventory. John Fowler apparently also supplied one for Vivien’s flat on Eaton Square.
