Description

  • Hercules and the Hydra
  • bronze, on a black marble base
  • After a model by Giambologna (1529-1608) Italian, probably 19th century

Condition

Overall, the condition of the bronze is very good, with some dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. There is some rubbing to the patina, in particular to the high points of Hercules' chest and side. The Hercules figure is slightly loose on the base, but stable. There is minor greening to the bronze, in particular to Hercules' abdomen, his proper right shin, to a small spot the the Hydra's beak and to the Hydra's tail. There are some minor scratches and a small loss to the patina at Hercules' abdomen. There is a casting fissure to the top of the Hydra's tail. There are a few very minor casting flaws in areas, including some minor lacunae to the back of Hercules' legs. The marble base in in good condition, with a few small chips, in particular to the corners and the top edge.
