Description

  • Corpus Christi
  • bronze, on a Perspex cross
  • Italian, circa 1700
with a bronze plaque inscribed: INRI

Condition

Overall the condition of the bronze is good with minor dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. There is particular dirt in the crevices of the hair and the perizonium. The bronze is cast in sections, and stable joints and original plugs are slightly visible at both arms. There is rubbing to the bronze, in particular to the high points at the rib cage, the knees, the nose and the eyebrows. There is a small dent to the tip of the nose. There are minor scratches to the surface. There is minor flaking to the patina, including to the feet and to the proper left knee. The modern perspex cross is in good condition with only minor scratches to some of the edges and corners.

Catalogue Note

This crucifix, with its expressive face and billowing perizonium, is reminiscent of the work by Alessandro Algardi (1598-1654), and was probably executed by a follower. A design for a crucifix in Montagu's catalogue (op. cit. no. 92) is particularly close to the present corpus.
