Both the canvases are relined, the paint surfaces are clean and the varnishes are clear and even. The dark ground has become visible in some of the more thinly-painted areas of both canvases. The former: inspection under ultraviolet light reveals retouching throughout the sky, scattered in the water, in the sails of the far boat, and in the dark archways of the Doge's Palace. The latter: inspection under ultraviolet light reveals retouching to a damage in the sky, upper centre, measuring approx. 4 x 6 cm., and small retouchings and strengthenings scattered throughout the sky. There are also retouchings along all four margins. All these retouchings are unobtrusive to the naked eye and the paintings appear in overall good condition.
