Description

  • Female Blackamoor with a Basket of Grapes
  • gilt and polychromed wood
  • Italian, Venice, probably 18th century

Condition

Overall, the condition of the wood is good, with dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. There is evidence of past worming, in particular to the face and to the proper right arm at the back. There is stable splitting to the wood, consistent with the material, including to the drapery at the front, to the proper right leg at the back and to the proper right arm at the back. There is rubbing to the polychromy, in particular to the nose. The polychromy has probably been refreshed in areas, including to the raised left arm. There is craquelure to the polychromy at the chest. The base is carved separately, and joints are slightly visible at the terrasse.
