Description

  • bronze, on a veined red marble base
  • Circle of Nicolò Roccatagliata (circa 1560-1629) and Sebastian Nicolini (active until after 1636) Italian, Venice, circa 1600

Condition

Overall the condition of the bronze is good, with minor dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. There is some rubbing to the lacquer patina at the high points. There are a few minor casting fissures and lacunae, including to the book and to the lion's proper left wing. There is a pin to the top of the saint's head. There are some minor nicks and scratches. The marble base is in good condition with some minor wear, including some filled patches and minor nicks and chips.

Catalogue Note

This fine figure of Saint Mark relates to the series of Saints in San Marco, Venice, by Sebastian Nicolini (Kryza-Gersch, op. cit., figs. 202-205). Its facial type, in particular, may also be compared to the figures in the relief with The Presentation of the Rose of Virtue to the Dogaressa in San Giuseppe, Venice, by Cesare Groppo, who collaborated with the Roccatagliata workshop (Kryza-Gersch, ibid., fig. 201).
