Literature

List of Portraits at Fettercairn House, 1924, p. 6 (Long Passage).

Condition

Large (rectangular) Charles II: The canvas is lined, the paint surface is dirty, and the varnish is discoloured. There are scattered retouchings, many discoloured, to old losses throughout the background, particularly upper left, and in the sitter's hair, right. There are additional losses in the lower corners and in the sitter's chest by the lower margin. There are also scattered pinprick losses in the sitter's face. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals the aforementioned retouchings under a milky varnish. Small (oval) Charles II: The canvas is lined, the paint surface is relatively clean, and the varnish is relatively clear and even. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals very few pinprick retouchings to the right of the sitter and a couple in his forehead. Portrait of a Gentleman: The canvas is lined, the paint surface is slightly dirty and worn in the darks, and the varnish is rather discoloured and uneven. There are some discoloured, scattered retouchings to an area in the upper left corner, measuring approx. 2 x 5 cm. Inspection under ultraviolet light is hampered by the milky varnish but it reveals some old retouchings along the upper margin and in the upper right corner, and some minor strengthening in the hair.
