  • 51cm. high; 1ft. 8in.
with three upturned branches arranged around an adapted central stem, on foliate slender baluster stems attended by standing figures on leaf cast baluster socles and square feet, adapted as lamps

Provenance

Probably acquired by Sir William Forbes, 7th Bt. (1773-1828)

Literature

There is an interesting bill which describes a pair of three-light bronze figures from John Blades, 5 Ludgate Hill, London dated 8 February 1804, detailing '1 pair 3 light bronze figures £42-0-0, case wharfage and shipping £0-9-0'. It is not possible to say whether the pair offered here are those described and certainly the presence of a central stem, albeit altered, would suggest otherwise, but it does show that Blades was supplying bronze lighting as well as the glassware with which he is usually associated, and that Sir William, the 7th Bt., was buying from the very best that London had to offer and shipping objects back to Edinburgh.

Condition

These will need to be professionally re-wired by a qualified electrician. Central candle stem altered for electricity. Slightly mis-shapen. One drip pan missing. One drip pan replaced. Losses. Tarnished gilt-bronze. Surface scratches. Nice quality and very decorative.
