Catalogue Note

Newbattle was originally a monastery, founded in the 12th Century by Cistercian monks. Shortly after the reformation it was converted into a family home by Mark Kerr, father of the 1st Earl of Lothian. As with lot ?, Nasmyth probably painted this view in 1789, therefore showing the mansion, long before William Burn and David Bryce’s 19th Century alterations.
