both naturalistically modelled, their tail feathers forming a handle and their open beaks the spout, richly glazed in brown, black and yellow on grassy mound bases, incised X mark to underside of both,

Newbattle Abbey, Midlothian, Inventory, 1901, p.23, in the School Room; ‘2 china boxes in form of hens'
Condition
Both have some some losses to tips of beak, one cover with a chip, otherwise in generally good condition.
