Condition

The panel is uncradled, flat and stable. The paint surface is dirty and the varnish discoloured. Inspection under ultra violet light reveals very minor scattered retouchings. There is a pinprick loss at the very upper margin but otherwise no major damages. in good overall condition. Offered in a carved and gesso gilt frame in fair condition.

Catalogue Note

James Irvine's letter to Sir William informing him of the purchase of this painting reveals the agent's propensity for negotiation on behalf of his client. The picture is listed (along with lot 33) against the 'price asked - 50 Louis' and the 'price paid - 25 Louis.'1
