Description

Comprising: a gold and citrine intaglio signet ring, 1800s, the oval foil backed citrine carved to depict the Forbes crest above the monogram "WF" and the motto "Nec Timide Nec Temere" size I; navette-shaped late 18th century case, a gold signet ring, 1841, depicting the Forbes crest, with glazed locket to the reverse depicting a crowned "L" inscribed "14 Novr 1841"; size Q; a gold and chrysoprase intaglio signet ring, mid 19th century, inset with a shield-shaped chrysoprase carved to depict the Family arms, size P; a gold and blue paste intaglio signet ring, 1800s, inset with a square foil backed blue paste carved to depict the Royal arms of the Stuarts 1603-88, flanked by the initials "MR", size I; a gold and banded agate signet ring, 1800s, inset with a banded agate cabochon, size U.

Cf: The archives show a bill from a William Robertson of Edinburgh dated 7th January 1795 for a "crystal seal mounted in gold cutting crest and cypher on ditto £0-12-0" which may refer the the citrine signet ring.

Cf: The archives show a bill from James Tassie of London dated 22nd June 1784 for "2 pastes of coat of arms £0-5-0, and ditto set in a gold seal £1-6-6" which may refer to the blue paste signet ring.

Condition

Citrine intaglio, mounted in gold, minor abrasions commensurate with age and wear, "Nec Timide Nec Temere" "Neither Shy Nor Rashly", case in good condition. Gold signet ring, mounted in gold, with extensive abrasions and wear through age and wear, crest heavily worn, locket to reverse with large chip to bottom left hand side, underside of glass heavily discoloured. Chrysoprase signet ring, mounted in gold, abrasions commensurate with age and wear, small chips to edge of arms on intaglio through use. Paste intaglio, mounted in gold, abrasions commensurate with age and wear, signs of re-sizing to shank, paste intaglio heavily abraded and worn. Agate signet ring, mounted in gold, abrasions commensurate with age and wear, shank misshapen with split to underside on one shoulder.
