A North Italian neoclassical rosewood, walnut and marquetry commode early 19th century

Description

  • rosewood, walnut
  • 92cm. high, 129cm. wide, 58cm. deep; 3ft. ¼in., 4ft. 2¼in., 1ft. 10¾in.
with a figured white marble top over a fitted secretaire drawer inlaid with sphinxes and scrolls, above two doors inlaid with an octagonal architectural caprice, flanked by scrolling female terms, enclosing later sliding trays, on blind fluted square tapering legs

Condition

The marble top with old minor chips and scratches and chips to extremities. The timber faded to the sides. The brass handles to the secretaire drawers probably later. The fitted secretaire drawer has been restored and repolished. The veneers are stable however there are small losses and small patches. There is a filled repair to the key site. The interior of the cupboard is later and incorporates later sliding trays. The reverse of the doors is lined with new supporting timber. This piece is in restored condition and is ready to place.
