Catalogue Note

This drawing is composed with great freedom and was probably drawn on the spot, while the artist visited Tivoli. It shows the Temple of Sybil which, for the 18th Century grand tourist, was one of the major cites to be visited. Richard Wilson painted it on a number of occasions. The most celebrated image is perhaps The Temple of the Sibyl, Tivoli, an oil on canvas that dates to 1752 and which is now in the National Gallery of Ireland.
