Catalogue Note
Kenilworth Castle is situated to the south-east of Birmingham in the county of Warwickshire. Girtin visited the famous ruins in 1794, while touring the midlands with James Moore, a keen antiquarian and amateur artist from Southwark.
The dilapidated state of the ancient walls, whose monumentally has here been so convincingly portrayed, clearly appealed to Girtin’s sense of the ‘picturesque’ and his interest in medieval architecture. Alongside the present work, three other watercolours of the castle by Girtin survive. The Ruins of the Castle Hall, Kenilworth is now in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, while views of the Banqueting Hall and the castle at a distance are held in private collections.1 We are grateful to Susan Morris for her help when cataloguing this work.
