Condition

The following condition report is provided by Henry Gentle who is an external specialist and not an employee of Sotheby's: The original canvas has been lined and the paint, although raised, is secure and stable. The stretcher marks are pronounced and there is a loss of tension resulting is a slight bulge to the bottom of the painting. The paint layer is well preserved with only moderate abraded thinness visible to the more delicate shadows of the sitter's face , hands and wig and one or two small defined areas. The glazes to the brocade of the waistcoat have been slightly compromised and removal of the degraded and discoloured varnish would improve tonality. Overall, the painting is well preserved and structurally sound.
