Catalogue Note

This atmospheric landscape appears to be executed by the same hand as a drawing given to Gerrit Battem after an Adam Elsheimer composition. The present work belongs to a group of small gouaches that previous scholarship attributed to Adam Elsheimer but more recent research by Keith Andrews has given rise to the names of Pieter de With and Gerrit Battem.  Stylistically, the manner in which this sheet is drawn is more akin to works by Pieter de With.
