Catalogue Note

Lady Mary Wedderburn was the daughter of John Belsches of Invermay (1710-1753) and Mary Stuart of Castlemilk (1710-1739). She married, as his second wife, Sir Henry Wedderburn, a captain in the East Indies. The miniaturist signing C.D. is indentified with C[harles] Dixon, who lived in London and in circa 1757 painted Benjamin Franklin (Museum of Fine Arts, Boston).1
