Condition

The colours have been very well preserved in this miniature. There are a number of scratches to the surface of the painting.

Catalogue Note

The sitter was the great-grandson of William, 1st Marquess of Douglas (1589-1660). Between 1655 and 1660 he was styled the Earl of Angus. He married twice, firstly in 1670, Barbara, daughter of the 1st Earl of Mar and secondly, in 1692, Mary daughter of the 1st Marquess of Lothian. He died without children in 1700.
