Description
- A group of seven works containing views of Scotland, 1780-1830, comprising:
- Paper
i) Cordiner, Charles. Antiquities & Scenery of the North of Scotland, in a Series of Letters, to Thomas Pennant.. London: 1780, 21 engraved plates (one of which folding), engraved title vignette, contemporary speckled calf [Sir William Forbes, bookplate];
ii) [A Collection of plates thought to be from Cordiner, Charles. Remarkable ruins, and romantic prospects, of North Britain. With ancient monuments, and singular subjects of natural history]. [London]: P. Mazell, 1788-[95], 31 engraved plates with accompanying explanatory text, calf-backed boards by Robert Seton, Edinburgh [Sir John Stuart Forbes, bookplate];
iii) [Collection of plates]. Perth: R. Morison & Son, 1793, 24 hand-coloured oval aquatint plates, without text, calf-backed boards [A. Belshes, signature on front paste-down];
iv) Scotia Depicta. London: T. Bensley, 1804, additional engraved title, 40 engraved plates (of 48), green calf over floral boards by Robert Seton, Edinburgh [Sir John Stuart Forbes, bookplate];
v) Daniell, W. Illustrations of the island of Staffa, in a series of views. London: Thomas Davison, 1818, half-title, 9 hand-coloured aquatints, cloth-backed boards, paper label on upper cover;
vi) Paterson, J.S. Angus and Mearns. [c.1823-25], 25 lithographed plates (of 30), 5 leaves of text with descriptions of the views and list of subscribers (4 leaves slightly smaller than overall size), contemporary half calf [Sir John Stuart Forbes, signature on front free endpaper] [Abbey, Scenery, 497 (pt. 3 only)], re-backed, some creasing, a few minor repairs;
Angus and Mearns was originally published in 6 parts, each with 5 lithographed plates. This copy does not include part 4. The plates include: Craighall Rattray, Glammis Castle, Cortachy Castle, Fasque House, Castle and Town of Brechin, Dun House - The Seat of Miss Erskine, Loch of Lintrathen, Edzell Castle, Town of Montrose, Denfinella, Abbey of Arbroath, Kinnaird Castle, Blackhall, Rossie Castle, Dundee From the River, Arbuthnott, Bridge of Feugh, Fetteresso Castle, Broughty Ferry, Town of Abroath, Invery, Drumtochty, Phesdo, Lindertis, Town of Forfar.
vii) Hullmandel, Charles Joseph. Picturesque Views of Ancient Castellated Mansions in Scotland. Drawn in Stone by C. Hullmandel, from sketches taken on the spot. London: C. Hullmandel, [c.1830], 21 lithographed plates, original wrappers superimposed on diced Russia, lacking title-page, rebacked;
Mostly folio and 4to, some wear to bindings, some light spotting and soiling, occasional offsetting (7)
