Catalogue Note
The stained glass window was conceived to commemorate the life of Sir William Forbes of Pitsligo, 7th Bt. (1773-1828). It was erected by his eldest surviving son Sir John Stuart Forbes between November 1859 and May 1860 and one assumes this drawing was presented to him after its installation.
The 7th Bt's. brother George Forbes (1789-1857) was the fourth son of Sir William Forbes of Pitsligo, 6th Bt. He played an active part in the construction of St John’s on Princes Street and was a Vestryman at this church from 1824 to 1857, he is interred in the graveyard there. His interest in the development of Princes Street was not solely confined to St John’s but also in the construction of one of Edinburgh’s greatest monuments. He was a member of the committee for the memorial to Sir Walter Scott. A fascinating link when the family connection to the author is considered. It is possible that this proposed design for the structure was his.
