Description

  • Collection of five titles, 1757-[1859], comprising:
  • Paper
i) A Collection of the Dresses of Different Nations, Antient and Modern. London: Thomas Jefferys, 1757, 2 volumes (of 4), folio, each with double-page titles in French and English printed in red and black with engraved title vignettes, 239 (of 240) engraved handcoloured plates [ESTC T88921], lacking plate in volume one, repairs, spine rebacked;

ii) Holbein, John. The Dances of Death, through the various stages of human life. Wherein the capriciousness of that tyrant is exhibited in forty-six copperplates. Edinburgh: 1788, 4to, 50 engraved plates (with additional plates) [Sir William Forbes, bookplate] [ESTC T124856];



iii) Dresses of the Representatives of the People, Members of the two councils, and the Executive Directory. Paris: Deroy [and] London: E. and S. Marding, 1796, 8vo, additional engraved title in French, 15 engraved plates, all handcoloured [Sir William Forbes, bookplate], marbled calf, plates shaved (not affecting images), hinges cracked, light wear to binding; 



iv) [A Miniature Historic Library]. Natural History of 48 birds. [London: Darton, Harvey and Co., ?1812], 48 engraved plates, blue morocco, [Harriet L.A. Kerr, gift inscription of front paste-down dated 1815], hinges cracking, with first plate becoming detached;



v) Heckle, A. The florist, or, An extensive and curious collection of flowers, for the imitation of young ladies, either in drawing, or in needle-work. London: John Bowles and Son, [?1859],  oblong folio, 21 engraved handcoloured plates, reversed calf, drawing and print laid in, minor loss to title, lacking plate 10, 12, 18; 



Some spotting and browning, occasional minor tears (some repaired), some wear to bindings (6)
