Condition

The canvas has a firm relining. There a no major damages visible. There is one very small loss in the wig on the left hand side, visible in the catalogue illustration. Inspection under ultra violet light reveals a thick varnish - the only intervention visible are are some minor retouchings in background on the right hand side.

Catalogue Note

Alexander Belsches of Tofts, son of John Belsches of Tofts (1580-1631) was Lord Advocate, knighted by King Charles I, and appointed Lord of Session on 2 July 1646, taking the title Lord Tofts. He was MP for Berwick from 1644.
