  • Two Tassie glass paste portrait  medallions, 1791 and 1794

  • frames 14.5cm., 5 ¾ in. high
oval, the first of the Reverend Hugh Blair, in profile to dexter, in clerical garb, inscribed on the truncation: Hugh Blair D.D., signed and dated 1791; the second of the Hon. Lieutenant-General Alexander Leslie, to sinister, in uniform, inscribed: Honourable Lieut. Gen. Leslie. Ob. 27th Dec. 1794, signed, each on clear glass over Wedgwood blue card each in turned wood frames, the second later inscribed on the reverse: The Hon. [] / General Leslie / for / Lord Adam Gordon

Condition

Hugh Blair cracked in two places; frames later restored

Catalogue Note

Dr Blair (1718-1800) was a Scottish minister, moralist and author. He was a founder member of the Royal Society of Edinburgh.

Lieut. General Leslie (1731-1794) was an army officer who came to prominence during the American War of Independence. He died not in battle but of illness in his native Scotland.
