Condition

The three oval portraits are glazed and individually framed. They have much surface dirt and seemingly some old water damage and traces of woodworm. There are a few old tears and creases in the paper throughout. Inspection under ultra violet light reveals minor strengthenings throughout and some retouchings to the creases and tears.

Catalogue Note

The 1924 inventory lists two portraits by Staveley: Sir John Hay (d. 1830) and Lt. Colonel Hay. The inscriptions on the reverse of the present three pictures, however, identify the sitters as Sir William Forbes, father and son, and Colonel Hay, indicating that there were additional portraits of the Hay family, by Staveley, in the collection.
