Description

  • larger 31cm high; 1ft. ¼in.
of compressed baluster form on a trumpet socle and moulded square plinth together with a smaller figured black marble urn, 19th century, of similar form (2)

Provenance

The larger probably Sir William Forbes, 6th Bt. (1739-1806) and the smaller possibly Sir John Stuart Hepburn Forbes, 8th Bt. (1804-1866)

The smaller vase possibly that acquired from a Mr Skeen, Clemens Street, Leamington Spa, 19 September 1835; 'One black marble vase, £5-5-0', NLS (Acc.4796/196)

Condition

A lovely sepcimen. Chips and old marks to extremities. Moulded edges and corners chipped. Areas of filler to base of blue john plinth where it joins alabaster. A lovely object despite this typical wear.
