Provenance

The gift of Rebecca Ogilvy (1719-1804) widow of John, Master of Pitsligo (1723-81) to Sir William Forbes, 6th Bt. (1739-1806).

Condition

The canvas has been lined, the paint surface is slightly dirty and the varnish is only slightly discoloured. Parts of the impasto paintwork are very well-preserved. There are some pinprick, discoloured retouchings in the sitter's forehead and chest. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals very little intervention. The painting is in overall very good condition. Offered in a carved and silvered frame in good condition.

Rebecca was the daughter of John Norton, and first wife of the Alexander Forbes, 4th Lord of Pitsligo (1678-1762) (see lot 109), with whom she had one son, John, Master of Pitsligo (c.1713–1781).
