  • Scottish School, 17th century
  • Portrait of Alexander, 3rd Lord Forbes of Pitsligo (b. circa 1655-90), half-length, wearing armour and a white stock
  • oil on canvas, in a carved Sunderland frame

Provenance

Both probably the gift of Rebecca Ogilvy (1719-1804) widow of John, Master of Pitsligo (1723-81) to Sir William Forbes, 6th Bt. (1739-1806).

Condition

Illustrated top: Painting is quite substantially worn in places with significant subsequent restoration notably on the collar, forehead and darker parts of the armour. His right cheek has also undergone quite extensive retouching. Illustrated bottom: Canvas slightly loose at the top. Paint surface generally ok, somewhere in the dark and some retouching repair throughout the face, particularly to his left cheek, which has suffered from wear.
