Catalogue Note

AN APPARENTLY UNRECORDED THIRD STATE of Gerard Mercator’s original map of present day Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. The first state was published in the "Atlantis Pars Altera" in 1595. The second state retained the imprint of Mercator and "Amstelodami, Sumptibus Henrici Hondii 1627" was added in the lower right corner. The last issue of the plate is found in the 1636 English edition of the atlas. The history of the original Mercator plates beyond this date is not known. This possibly third state has "Henric Hondius 1627" in the lower right corner. The cartouche is entirely re-engraved, now in typically baroque style with putti replacing the old renaissance design, the title now being "Livoniae et Curlandiae descriptio".
