Description

  • Unfinished portolan chart of the Mediterranean. [Italy, c.1670], 172 x 390mm., folding manuscript chart in ink and colours on vellum, embellishments and some islands heightened in gold
  • parchment
The chart is unfinished in that coastal place names have not been inked in. The work is reminiscent of other charts attributed Giovanni Battista Cavallini, especially an example in the Library of Congress which dates from c.1678 (LC Nautical charts on vellum, 20).
