Catalogue Note
Doorly "was third officer on Scott's relief ship Morning in 1902-3 and 1903-4, serving under Capt. William Colbeck, who had sailed with Borchgrevink, and under second officer Edward Evans, who later became Scott's second in command on the 1910-13 expedition. Doorly and Evans were already "chums" from their early training experiences, and Evans sought Doorly out to participate in the relief expedition. Doorly leapt at the chance to spend some valued time with his friend; Doorly was qualified in his own right, but Evans's influence helped secure him the position over a highly qualified field of applicants."
