Condition

The canvas has been lined. There is some faint, stable craquelure in some isolated spots of the composition, mostly noticeable in the sky. Inspection under ultra-violet light reveals scattered lines of in-painting to address to aforementioned craquelure, some isolated spots in the figures and foreground with a larger spot to the right of the rightmost figure, and one larger area of restoration (circa 7 by 9cm.) to address a possible repaired tear in the foreground in the lower right quadrant. Otherwise, this picture presents very well and is overall in good condition. Ready to hang. Presented in a decorative gilt frame. The colours are slightly lighter and less red than in the catalogue illustration.

Catalogue Note

This work, exhibited at the Salon of 1831, was inspired by Decamps' journey to the Eastern Mediterranean in 1828 as part of a French diplomatic mission.
