Catalogue Note

A lovely copy of the first English edition of the author's celebrated and highly influential science fiction novel, which was issued simultaneously in cloth and wrappers (for the latter see lot ***). The American edition had appeared two weeks previously. The autograph letter by Wells is to an unidentified correspondent, thanking him for the "kind things you say of me", and recording that he has asked Heinemann "to send you a presentation copy of my book in due course" (Heatherlea, Worcester Park, Surrey, 8 December [?1895]).
