Catalogue Note

"I respect his heart, but heartily disapprove of his celebrated Legacy to his Daughters" wrote Mary Wollstonecraft of Dr. Gregory in chapter II of The Vindications of the Rights of Women (1792), strongly attacking his precepts that women should cultivate a fondness for dress, practise dissimulation, and conceal both their real affection for their husbands and their mental abilities.
