Condition

Executed on cream wove paper, not laid down. Hinged to the mount at two points on the verso of the upper and lower edges. The edges of the sheet are deckled. There are artist's pinholes at intermittent points along the edges and in each of the four corners. The sheet is time stained and there is a faint old mat stain. There are some scattered faint spots of foxing, notably visible in the unpainted border. This work is in overall good condition and the pigment remains fresh and bright.

Catalogue Note

In the 1920s and 30s Feininger would often spend his summers away from the city, resting and spending time sketching in nature - something which bought him enormous pleasure. Having returned to New York years later he wrote 'what I really miss is drawing from nature and making notes, for instance by the Baltic Sea, in Deep, or in the Villages surrounding Weimar'. (Feininger to Lux Feininger, cited in: Wolgang Buche, "Zurück in New York - Zurück in einer vertrauten Fremde" in: Exh. Cat., Halle, Stiftung Moritzburg, Kunstmuseum des Landes Sachsen-Anhalt, Lyonel Feininger. Züruck in Amerika. 1937 - 1956, May - August 2009, p.154)
