Description

  • Allegorical composition of François Ier on Julius Caesar's path
  • Oil on panel

Provenance

Collection of Arturo Berlingieri by a mark on the back of the frame

Condition

To the naked eye, the painting is in a good overall condition. It is painted on a soft wood panel, made of one uncradled board. The panel is perfectly straight and the painted surface perfectly stable. It is under a very dirty varnish which needs to be lightened. To the naked eye, we can not see any restoration. Under the UV lamp, the painting is under a green even varnish. We can see some tiny retouches in the sky and the lower right corner mainly. We see a restoration in the coat of the king François Ier on the left at the foreground.

Catalogue Note

This 16th century French school work would be an allegory representing Francis I in the footsteps of Julius Caesar, standing behind his two sons in the foreground, the navigator Jacques Cartier on the left, and alongside Suleiman the Magnificent, recognizable by his large white turban, surrounded by his guards. The background depicts different monuments of Rome, from left to right the circus of Caligula and Nero with its obelisk currently on St. Peter's Square, the Cestius pyramid, the Colosseum, a triumphal arch, evoking that of Titus, as well as the Castel Sant'Angelo. The alliance of the Ottoman emperor and the French King against Charles V is highlighted here with an audience of Oriental and French figures. The King self-assimilates Caesar from the beginning of his reign, like so many 16th century rulers and especially his predecessor Louis XII. The power of the two sovereigns is staged here in the heart of the Eternal City, a sign of the promise of a destiny as glorious as the Roman emperor’s.
