Condition

The painting is on its original canvas. Very light traces of the stretcher appear on the canvas. The hair on the cheek and the neek of the model has very, very slightly different surface than the rest of the composition : this may be due to a pentimento by the artist. No repaint is visible under UV light. Very good condition. The picture in the catalogue is slightly yellower than the painting is in reality.

Catalogue Note

As indicated by the title, we are probably in the presence of a portrait of the famous comedian Marguerite Moreno. She enters the Comédie Française in 1890. Stéphane Mallarmé and Lévy-Dhurmer are already close friends of hers. Our portrait may be dated  circa 1900. Lévy-Dhurmer executed other portraits of the young mysterious actress. The Bowes Museum keeps a beautiful piece representing Marguerite Moreno, titled The Autumn Bride (see fig. 2).
