Catalogue Note

Joseph Franque paints the Portrait of the Empress watching over the Roi de Rome asleep in 1811 for Napoleon (kept at the Musée du Château de Versailles). It is presented at the 1812 Salon. Given the popularity of the scene, Franque executes a replica for the Court of Vienna, which is most probably the painting we are here presenting.
