Condition

To the naked eye, the painting is in a reasonable good condition. It is painted on a reinforced oak tree panel made of three thick boards. We can see the junction of two boards on the left part of the composition and a vertical crack starting at the lower edge and going to the red drapery of the Christ. Few lift of painting in the upper part of the composition in the lunette shaped part. Used glazing in the hair of the Christ. Under the UV light : thick dirty varnish. Few very tiny retouches.

Catalogue Note

Our panel was certainly the center part of a triptych. It has been discussed among different specialists and curators during the last decades. For some this panel has been executed by a student of Pieter Pourbus, Antoon Claeissins, but some other would rather give it to Pieter Pourbus.
