Provenance

Sale, Bonhams London, 14th June 2005, lot 72
Rowntree Clark, London, where acquired by the present owner

Condition

Not examined out of the frame. The four studies have been collaged onto another sheet, to which a further small strip of paper has been added at the top. Both these sheets in turn appear to have been fully laid down onto a backing card, although the sheet does cockle. The edges of the sheet are slightly uneven, in keeping with the Artist's materials. There is a tear apparent to the right side of the lower horizontal edge of the topmost study, with two further very small tears visible towards the left side of the upper and lower edges of the sheet. There is a repaired tear to the lower part of the right vertical edge, and there are further creases, handling marks and possible old repaired tears to the sheet and the collaged elements. There is a pinhole and minor abrasion to the left of the second study. There are some traces of light surface dirt and studio detritus in places, but subject to the above, the work appears to be in good overall condition. The work is window mounted and presented in a painted wooden frame, held under glass. Please telephone the department on +44 (0) 207 293 6424 if you have any questions regarding the present work.

Catalogue Note

Sutherland has expertly captured the dramatic, rocky landscape of his native Wales in these four studies, swiftly and succinctly sculpting the undulating forms using a minimal number of strokes.  The present work contains a study for the oil painting Western Hills of 1938-41, in the collection of the National Galleries of Scotland, Edinburgh, a richly atmospheric work which shows Sutherland’s prowess and feeling for landscape at its best.
