Condition

Unexamined out of frame. The sheet appears adhered in several places to a backing board, but not fully laid down. There is an old soft crease to the top right corner, and a possible old repaired tear to the centre of the horizontal edge, only visible upon very close inspection. Elsewhere there is minor cockling to the sheet, together with some scattered spots of surface dirt, minor foxing and studio detritus, but this excepting the work appears in very good overall condition. Housed behind glass in an ornate painted and gilt frame, float-mounted against a backing card. Unexamined out of frame. Catalogue Note

Executed circa 1932-3, this drawing depicts a violent street brawl in which rioters attack one another with broken bottles, and decapitated heads are paraded on poles. The isolated hand - a favourite Surrealist motif - has parallels in other works by Burra, most notably The Hand of 1931 (Private Collection).
